Topicality is a funny thing in that what is special for a given moment doesn’t always retain its luster. This pick, Steve’s second consecutive selection from Peter Medak, in particular is strange for a non-British audience. Its a quirky, black comedy about politics, but its length and run-on jokes make it hard to recommend. This is one of the few moments where we sacrificed our time so you don’t have to – enjoy!
Dollar Reviews 029: Doctor Strange
Another Marvel movie, another cycle of rankings, but not on our part. We like viewing films for their individual merits; however, with Infinity War coming soon after two full phases of hype, its hard to separate a single story from the grandiose whole. We’re a little staggered on our appreciation for this film, but its unabashedly a fun ride. Let’s hope Disney keeps up the good work.
Two Cents 070: Heartbreak Hotel
The week in which nothing much has transpired besides heartbreak, Dave Chappelle is going to host next week’s Saturday Night Live, Fox has renewed The Simpsons up to season 30, another Verhoeven classic is being remade sadly, Wanda continues its media purchases with Dick Clark Productions, Disney bests its box office records, and we come up with the Madea/SAW crossover for Lionsgate. Plus, AT&T is getting sued for collusion, The Flash continues its director woes, we question if Johnny Depp is in lazy mode, Sony is adapting Sonic for the big screen next, and I tiredly try to recite Best Picture winners.
Debt to Cinema 059: Love & Basketball
I’ve been telling people recently how strange it is that I don’t care about sports anymore. Football, baseball, and basketball were all such big parts of my identity at different points of my life, and yet I have moved on. I can point at this podcast as a more worthy time suck, but chances are the only game I pursue now is love. This magically, emotional film, despite its title, aligns with my heart, leaning one way more than the other despite its makeup #IdBuyThatForADollar

The week in which we spend the first 30 mins talking about our recent watches/plays (including my ongoing PSVR impressions), AT&T attempts to lower public disdain of vertical integration by hinting DirecTV Now will only be $35/month, Donald Trump’s Hollywood Star’s continual vandalism and its effect on voter sympathy, Amazon is now available in China, Microsoft continues to impress by introducing the Windows 10 Creator Update and its accompanying VR headsets, and ABBA and Muppet Babies are returning! Plus, Sony’s Uncharted adaptation, Rambo, Zelda Fitzgerald, the continual stupidity of Cupertino, Twitch has a cooking show now, and lots of HTC Vive info.

Sometimes when you don’t know anything going into a film, this magical moment happens where you’re so stunned by its brilliance you feel almost stupid for never knowing about it. This week’s selection is that feeling two fold as Steve and I praise this masterful “horror” mystery which is better than the sum of its parts. #IdBuyThatForADollar is quite the understatement this time around, but if the shoe fits..
Two Cents 068: Let’s Get Political
The week in which we’re back after I spent the prior week hosting someone in a different fashion altogether and reintroduce a segment to the show in which I share my Playstation VR first impressions. Also, (30 mins later) AT&T is re-establishing itself as a monopoly by purchasing Time Warner, Wang Jialin unveiled Movie Metropolis and his plan to kickstart Chinese tourism and commerce, the NBA is going to broadcast one game a week in VR, Devin Faraci is scum, Marvel continues the worst trend in directing, and Chris Rock has landed a huge Netflix check. Plus, the Nintendo Switch, High Frame Rates in cinema, The Coen Brother’s Dark Web, Donald Glover as the Young Lando, and I contemplate registering to vote to protest the usage of condoms in porn.

I usually don’t have the balls to watch these kind of movies, so what better selection is there than something remembered for its killer balls? This film kinda has it all (except for explanations) and I’m still not sure what to make of it, but I hope you find our convo on Don Coscarelli’s late 70s classic dreamy.
Debt to Cinema 056: Plan 9 From Outer Space
While the concept of a list of shame is generally reserved for acclaimed things, we believe in equality on this show and give the bottom of the barrel features a shot as well. Steve’s pick this week is a perfect example of why since Ed Wood’s sci-fi, zombie flick is often considered “the worst film of all time,” yet we both agree its hardly bad at all. This B-budget landmark might not be as enjoyable as Catwoman, but its definitely a spooky attraction worth a visit.

The week in which Netflix continues to challenge the theatrical release model, Ryan Kavanugh is looking to sell Relativity, Wang Jialin is stopping by Hollywood to scour the town, Alibaba is teaming with Amblin Partners, Yahoo assisted the NSA in scanning all their emails in real time, Samsung is ceasing production of the Note 7, and the latest from Google and Oculus’s press conferences. Plus, Amazon is adapting a podcast for Prime, pricing details for Turner’s Filmstruck streamer, the Suicide Squad Extended Cut, the Gears of War adaptation, more movies that don’t need to be on TV, and The Simpsons in VR.
