How sweet it is to bring Steve the gift that keeps on giving: trashy comedy gems from my list of favorites. This one is whacky, romantic, and too centered on getting a chuckle to be too offensive, right? Despite Carl Reiner’s first collab with the poor black child of this film being highly regarded, I found myself wondering if this was going to be another Bio-dome or Freddy Got Fingered.

Dollar Reviews 037: The Handmaiden
We sadly missed Chan Wook-Park’s latest offering in theaters, but thanks to the modern state of cinema, were gifted a free screening as part of our Amazon Prime memberships. There’s a lot to say about this darkly comedic, erotic thriller, especially as counter programming to our last episode, but what it comes down to is #IdBuyThatForADollar. Steve also rewatched the Disney Channel Original Movie, Phantom of the Megaplex (32:10) while I give my early impressions of Ready at Dawn’s Deformers (36:52) and Garfunkel and Oates: Trying to Be Special (43:21).
Dollar Reviews 036: Sandy Wexler
We’ve been nice overall when it comes to sharing our opinions of Adam Sandler’s recent offerings, not seeing the point in beating a dying horse, but after two hiccups on Netflix, Happy Madison has finally delivered something totally likeable. When that conversation trails off we split hairs over the Thor Ragnarok trailer (27:16) before doing a live reaction to the Star Wars Battlefront 2 reveal (33:51), followed by my showstopping Goodwill movie haul (37:46) and impressions of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN (44:17). Finally Steve caught Poltergeist in 70mm (48:58) and Gods of Egypt (51:24), while I saw The Accountant (55:29) and a double bill of We Are the Best and Los Punks (59:23).

Spring is in the air, weddings are on the rise, and seeing as how my selection was sandwiched between two by Steve related to remakes, I decided to make the best of it and finally watch the original for one of the better updated classics. Tune in to find out if Spencer Tracy is as bankable in the role I’ve always pictured Steve Martin in the second installment of our remake streak.
Two Cents 085: Oscars So WTF
The episode in which our hero from Bulworth and Dick Tracy finds himself in a sticky situation, the passing of Bill Paxton, the state of Playstation VR, Hellboy, Nightwing, and Devon Sawa?! Steve caught the apparently similar Get Out and A Cure for Wellness, while I have had HEALTH’s Disco 3 on repeat while exploring Thumper (PSVR). Plus, Netflix looking very Bright (so we try to calculate its money pool), 5G tests are coming this year, and VR in space!
Debt to Cinema 065: Black Christmas (1974) (Feat. Scream 101)
While everyone else is busy polishing off fruitcake, buying people presents, and doing their best to embody the holiday spirit, Steve thought we should visit the more sinister side of the yuletide season. We were lucky to have the spooktacular Brennan teach us about the slasher genre, while we marveled at this film’s place in it, and guide us on our first journey down Bob Clark’s lesser known Xmas miracle, which gives the best gift of all: fear #IdBuyThatForADollar

If I was smarter I would have picked Michael Crichton’s Westworld to tie-in with HBO’s hit series debut, but I was in the mood for splatter instead. Halloween is quickly approaching after all and I felt like paying off my annual debt to the horror genre here first with the Troma superhero film that started it all #IdBuyThatForADollar

Debt to Cinema 050: Kindergarten Cop
This week’s selection was originally Billy Madison to coincide with the beginning of the school year, but I vetoed that pick and offered Rodney Dangerfield’s Back to School instead. Steve decided a fourth option was best and opted for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1990 kiddie classic for reasons explained in the episode. Its equal parts heart warming and WTF, but mostly a fun, wild ride of genre blending, nostalgic importance.
