Two Cents 053: Enter The Void

The episode in which Steve’s roommates are celebrating our Independence Day, The Academy has opened its doors to diverse new talents, Lionsgate is buying Starz, MoviePass is playing with its subscription model, we speculate China’s role in the blockbusters to come, The Arrowverse might have just gotten a lot bigger, and the latest publicity stunt for Ghostbusters has me optimistic about Sony’s future. Plus, Jesus VR – The Story of Christ, The Olympics in VR, Tyrese joins Transformers 5, fun facts about Steven Spielberg, Apple’s patent for blocking camera usage, and more!

Dollar Reviews 024: Swiss Army Man/Finding Dory

We begin with the all Daniels, tour de farts, Swiss Army Man which will hopefully ride the current under the radar into your hearts, then surf into Finding Dory (20:28) a little later than the rest of the ocean of film critics. Finally, Steve caught Max Landis’s Victor Frankenstein (32:00) and I talk future proofing my Playstation VR library with Mike Bithell’s Volume (36:05).

Debt to Cinema 041: Odd Thomas

2016 has been a horrible year so far in terms of celebrity deaths. David Bowie and Alan Rickman are probably the most notable passings, but whereas they both had several iconic performances that made them cultural icons, Anton Yelchin was only just starting out. What better way to remember him than viewing a film about him being able to see ghosts?

Debt to Cinema 038: The Long Goodbye

Its pretty ironic that this film, given its title, comes at the beginning of Steve’s leave of absence from the show. He picked it (as he states in the intro) to tie in with The Nice Guys, and they are similar in a couple ways, but Elliot Gould brings a level of cool to his version of Philip Marlowe that Gosling and Crowe can’t mimic.

Debt to Cinema 037: Bulworth

With the rat race the 2016 Presidential Election has become, and more importantly, the increasing realization that all lives matter, this amazingly, sardonic Warren Beatty film is necessary viewing. Its over the top and laughably silly, but it comes from the right place. Hopefully this ep helps give it the attention it deserves now since it didn’t get it in 1998.

Debt to Cinema 036: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Last week my romance pick wasn’t quite my tempo, and this week Steve’s isn’t his. Perhaps we should start making selections for one another? For some reason, Ang Lee’s acclaimed Chinese martial arts/tragic love story, didn’t strike his fancy, but it leads to an interesting discussion on public perception of classics and the struggle of swimming against the tide of universal acclaim.

Debt to Cinema 035: Singles

I give a pretty good rundown of why I picked this film in the soft open, but if you need it in text form, I was basically just in a musical mood this week. I didn’t exactly get what I was looking for (while Steve’s expectations were surpassed), but am still keen on Cameron Crowe’s first televisual exploration in the coming weeks.

Two Cents 046: Tune Up #2 (Do Your Thing)

The week in which the show gets a complete overhaul, beginning with a new section where we keep tabs on past news items (Dreamworks Animation, James Wan/Aquaman, Yoga Hosers vs MPAA), Hulu (and maybe Youtube) are joining the OTT live TV game, Magic Mike Live is coming to Las Vegas, Batfleck is exec producing Justice League, Disney finally found their Young Han Solo, Universal adds another A-list monster to its universe, Lebron James is finally making a Space Jam sequel, and Kodak is giving film stock to kickstarter campaigns. Plus, the Oculus Rift is available at Best Buy, Max Landis has an idea for a fifth Scream movie, and Andrew Garfield is starring in the neo noir follow up to It Follows.

Dollar Reviews 021: Captain America: Civil War/Zootopia/Views/Overwatch (Beta)

This week we finally live up to our intro and give you reviews for a wide amount of media beginning with Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. Then we head to Zootopia (31:45), Sing Street again (35:40), take a look at Drake’s Views (42:40), and impressions of Blizzard’s Overwatch Beta (44:38). Finally Steve tells me about his screening of Dolemite (46:41) and I reminisce about the days of switching channels on cable and watching whatever they programmed.

Debt to Cinema 033: Election

Another week, another comedy pick from me. This one is about the absurdity of high school politics. You know how they say those four years shape you into the person you’ll be for the rest of your life? Let’s find out if its true as we’re currently in the midst of a presidential race.
