Debt to Cinema 071: Nine Lives (2005)
Film is revered as the art form most capable of mimicking the wonder of life, but this anthology of nine interconnected stories told in single takes by Rodrigo Garcia raises the bar. The surreal, and often dark tone these snapshots capture makes for a troubling viewing experience, but what better way to champion strong female leads than with subject matter rarely seen on screen. This might not be a perfect exercise of form over function, but it is; however, an unforgettable journey into the lives of Los Angeleno women #IdBuyThatForADollar

It took us forever to review one of Paul Verhoeven’s flicks, so I thought it would be fun to follow it up immediately with the project released before it. I could describe the experimental nature of the production of this 2012 release, but you’ll probably get a bigger kick listening to this episode with no further introduction. Suffice to say, if any recording defines our different critical styles, its this one.

The week in which I hopefully share details about my doomed romance for the last time, Tinder goes trans friendly, Domino’s does drone delivery in New Zealand, and Steve caught Terrence Malick’s A Voyage of Time and Brainscan, while I finally checked out Westworld’s pilot and Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. Also, Google and Facebook crack down on fake news ads, the possible end of the Electoral College, China continues its foothold in the movie industry, Marvel moves Inhumans to the small screen, the curious case of Watch Dogs 2, and a fun closing conversation about the future of VR, gaming, and 8K.
Dollar Reviews 029: Doctor Strange
Another Marvel movie, another cycle of rankings, but not on our part. We like viewing films for their individual merits; however, with Infinity War coming soon after two full phases of hype, its hard to separate a single story from the grandiose whole. We’re a little staggered on our appreciation for this film, but its unabashedly a fun ride. Let’s hope Disney keeps up the good work.
Two Cents 070: Heartbreak Hotel
The week in which nothing much has transpired besides heartbreak, Dave Chappelle is going to host next week’s Saturday Night Live, Fox has renewed The Simpsons up to season 30, another Verhoeven classic is being remade sadly, Wanda continues its media purchases with Dick Clark Productions, Disney bests its box office records, and we come up with the Madea/SAW crossover for Lionsgate. Plus, AT&T is getting sued for collusion, The Flash continues its director woes, we question if Johnny Depp is in lazy mode, Sony is adapting Sonic for the big screen next, and I tiredly try to recite Best Picture winners.
Two Cents 069: Rightside Up, Upside Down
The week in which we spend the first 30 mins talking about our recent watches/plays (including my ongoing PSVR impressions), AT&T attempts to lower public disdain of vertical integration by hinting DirecTV Now will only be $35/month, Donald Trump’s Hollywood Star’s continual vandalism and its effect on voter sympathy, Amazon is now available in China, Microsoft continues to impress by introducing the Windows 10 Creator Update and its accompanying VR headsets, and ABBA and Muppet Babies are returning! Plus, Sony’s Uncharted adaptation, Rambo, Zelda Fitzgerald, the continual stupidity of Cupertino, Twitch has a cooking show now, and lots of HTC Vive info.
Two Cents 068: Let’s Get Political
The week in which we’re back after I spent the prior week hosting someone in a different fashion altogether and reintroduce a segment to the show in which I share my Playstation VR first impressions. Also, (30 mins later) AT&T is re-establishing itself as a monopoly by purchasing Time Warner, Wang Jialin unveiled Movie Metropolis and his plan to kickstart Chinese tourism and commerce, the NBA is going to broadcast one game a week in VR, Devin Faraci is scum, Marvel continues the worst trend in directing, and Chris Rock has landed a huge Netflix check. Plus, the Nintendo Switch, High Frame Rates in cinema, The Coen Brother’s Dark Web, Donald Glover as the Young Lando, and I contemplate registering to vote to protest the usage of condoms in porn.
