La La Land – both a nickname for Hollywood and the transcendental place couples live in when everything is perfect. In a world where everyone can be a celebrity, this third pairing of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone reminds us why we go the movies in the first place. These star crossed lovers make Damien Chazelle’s landmark re-imagining of the movie musical sparkle in a time where song and dance are rarely coupled anymore. For so many reasons this has been sweeping the 2016 award season and it deserves all the money #IdBuyThatForADollar

The week in which we spend the first 30 mins talking about our recent watches/plays (including my ongoing PSVR impressions), AT&T attempts to lower public disdain of vertical integration by hinting DirecTV Now will only be $35/month, Donald Trump’s Hollywood Star’s continual vandalism and its effect on voter sympathy, Amazon is now available in China, Microsoft continues to impress by introducing the Windows 10 Creator Update and its accompanying VR headsets, and ABBA and Muppet Babies are returning! Plus, Sony’s Uncharted adaptation, Rambo, Zelda Fitzgerald, the continual stupidity of Cupertino, Twitch has a cooking show now, and lots of HTC Vive info.
Debt to Cinema 056: Plan 9 From Outer Space
While the concept of a list of shame is generally reserved for acclaimed things, we believe in equality on this show and give the bottom of the barrel features a shot as well. Steve’s pick this week is a perfect example of why since Ed Wood’s sci-fi, zombie flick is often considered “the worst film of all time,” yet we both agree its hardly bad at all. This B-budget landmark might not be as enjoyable as Catwoman, but its definitely a spooky attraction worth a visit.

The episode in which I finally have someone on that knows what VR is so I begin by asking him lots of things about working in the new medium, SanDisk created a 1TB SD card, Palmer Luckey has a fall from grace, Dalian Wanda is teaming with Sony on their tentpoles, music streaming is equally as profitable as sales now, AT&T’s DirecTV net neutrality no-no’s, Pokemon GO and Snapchat’s role in AR’s adoption, and the future of advertising/marketing in the VR age. Plus, Dawson’s Creek, VCRs, lactose intolerance, virtual reality’s lack of content & governance, parents not understanding the dangers of early VR exposure, VR gambling coming to casinos, and almost no film conversation at all.

The slow week in which I try a different format, Amazon might have landed the next Linklater flick, Arclight Theaters are on Fandango, I share a funny/sad coincidence about Dollar Reviews 028, Transformers 5 casting King Arthur and its possible cementing of a trend, my second attempt at making “live-reaction” a thing, and DC and Marvel news (with an unrequested re-review of Spiderman: Civil War). Plus, Jon Favreau made a virtual reality experience, Steve finally got a Google Cardboard, we guess why HTC Vive and Oculus Rift sales are stagnant, Linden Labs and IMAX reveal more about their VR gambles, and the future of education in a digital world.

The episode in which I return from my day off, Wanda plans to buy one of the major Hollywood studios, the trials and tribulations of Birth of a Nation, VR finding a place in the court room, the problem with music streaming exclusives, HBO signing the first triple coverage TV deal with AT&T, Fast 8’s on set drama (and its rumored WWE end), Doug Liman leaving Marvel for DC, Fox’s X-Men franchise status quo, and my fanboy dream of the DCEU. Plus, lots of Spiderman talk, Playstation coverage, the importance of Blade, my continued championing of the return of the mystery genre, and an exploration of why 3D paved the way for VR.

The week in which I had entirely too much fun bouncing between parties so Steve recorded the show without me after a misunderstood text, Ben Affleck jumps back on the murder mystery hype train, Ocean’s Ocho might already have all-female competition, Hulu is the latest streamer to sip the Marvel kool aid, Alibaba is set to build their own theaters in China, and Uber is going to experiment with driverless cars. Plus, Adam West is back as Batman, the return of smell-o-vision, Amazon’s developing VR experiences, Varsity Blues and The Lost Boys are coming to TV, and The Jesus is Going Places.
